Growing up so fast!

Austin is growing up so quickly, I can't even believe my eyes. He's four and a half months!!! WHAT???? We
ve started solids. So far he's had peas, green beans, sweet potato, and squash. Rumor has it we might try carrots tonight!!! His favorite activities? Trying to sit on his own, holding his own bottle, and petting Max and Molly!
Monster Trucks are awesome!

Likes to sit up every now and then

Just a small size difference! Getting closer in size everyday

I love you bubbers!

Plagiocephaly

Plagiocephaly, a word I've never heard before in my life and could barely pronounce. Until I was told by my pediatrician that my son has this. Now, reading the medical term it sounds pretty horrible, so before anybody worries too much, it just means that he has a mishapen head. Our poor, beautiful boy has something wrong with him. I'm a mom now and that means everything is somehow my fault. I've been racking my brain for about two weeks now trying to figure out what went wrong and what I should have done differently. The truth is, I don't think anything would have changed it. One of the top two reasons for plagioncephaly is spending too long in the birth canal. I was in labor for 28 hours (give or take) and he came out with a very coned head. It had gone down, but still one side on the back was flat and one side on the front was sunken in. Actually, until we saw the specialist, we thought that one side was out too far, in all actuality it is the opposite side isn't out far enough.

So where do we go from here? Pretty much we're on hold with a speciailist. Austin needs what is called a cranial band, but insurances sometimes consider them cosmectic proceedures and won't cover them. They are putting the well being of my child in the same category as a nose job or breast implant, thanks insurance companies. Once we get a yay or nay, we can move forward. Regardless we will be getting one, but we will have to pay out of pocket an enourmous amount of money. Thankfully we have some great family that has offered to help in any way they can. Austin will probably wear the band (I prefer band instead of helmet) for 2-4 months. I'm hoping more of the two month line, but since it is pretty bad it'll probably be longer than that. The goal is to get a difference of about 6 mms from each side. Our bodies are not symetrical, so it'll never be a 0. 6 and under is considered normal. Right now Austin is 17 mms different.

I'm getting used to the idea. I know this is for him and it is to prevent possible issues with his brain growth. I'm worried though. Worried that people will stare, think he has some type of disability, or make funny comments. I know they wouldn't mean any harm, but even the thought of, "Hey at least he's getting ready to play football," makes me cry right now. I've cried a lot about this entire situation, so I'm trying to be strong. I know it may seem selfish to an extent, but I hope to keep him out of the lime light while he is wearing the band. The truth is, I don't think people will say much, I just think they'll ask questions. At this point I'm not ready to answer questions and I don't know how soon I will be. I've never liked to  be the center of attention, which I'm afraid this experience will make us.

Below are some pictures of Austin's head, it is a little difficult to tell, but if you look straight on you can see that it always looks like his head is turned one way and it isn't. Plagiocephaly.... :(

Right side, back of his head is a little flat as is the left front side.

That isn't the couch flattening his head.
He's still my perfect, handsome little boy

Happy New Year!

I'm a little late on my New Year's blog (at least it isn't 2012 yet, right?). NYE will always have special meaning for Ryan and I because we found out we were pregnant on the 30th and told our families on the 31st. We initially were going to stay home since we didn't know how to work with a baby and staying up so late and what not. Andy ended up inviting us over to his in-laws house though. We were going to play some Wii bowling and then maybe come home. We ended up staying the entire night. Austin was a little crabby, but Aunt Cassandra did a great job settling him down and getting him to sleep.

Wii bowling was so much fun, I think we're going to make it a tradition now. Ryan won the first round and him and my dad were in the running for the second round winner, but we never ended up playing the championship game. At midnight the boys had a great time with the fireworks. This was the first year you could buy anything in AZ that involved a lighter, so they had a lot of fun. I hope everybody has a great 2011!!!
Hi Mommy, I'm going to stay up until midnight!

It was cold (maybe like 28 degrees) so I moved inside. :-)

I just love this picture of Austin supporting the Hawkeyes!

Christmas Time!

Austin had a great Christmas yesterday! It was a long 48 hours of celebration, but worth it all. On Christmas Eve we spent the day with my parents. We did gifts, soup and snacks, and then Church. Christmas morning was spent at our house, opening our gifts. We then went to Ryan's grandma's house and then his parents house. Our night ended with a short visit to Ryan's cousin's house (his dad's side of the family). Hopefully this week we can just chill. It has been such a long year, I feel like I need a week off. :-) Maybe next year we won't have so many visits, I'm sure people understand.

Christmas Cookies and other prep

I can't believe how close to Christmas it is. Amazing how fast a year can go when you're pregnant the entire time. Ryan and I had our second anniversary on the 13th. We did our annual Zoolights trip to celebrate. He proposed at Zoolights, so it is fitting. With the semester ending the 17th and Ryan being off work for two weeks as well, it was nice to get things done around the house to get ready for Christmas. I feel we got it done just in time to take it down. :-)
Austin's Ornament. It says Austin on one side and his birthday on the other.

Santa

I think I forgot to share that Austin got to meet Santa a few weeks ago. Mommy was just excited that his eyes were open!

Austin is 3 months old!!

Austin is three months old today. I can't believe it! It seems like just yesterday we found out we were pregnant. It seems like just yesterday I saw his tiny heart beating for the first time. It seems like yesterday I just felt him kick for the first time. It seems like yesterday I had my first contraction. It feels like just yesterday and I looked him in the eyes, with tears, and said his name for the first time. I love you Austin Hunter, more than words can say! Daddy feels the same way.

To celebrate we decided today was a good day to take out family pictures. Austin did a pretty good job and we got some great shots. Thanks again Mom and Dad for taking these for us!

Getting ready for pictures

Everybody together

I wish my face didn't look so weird. I was trying to get him to smile.

Aww, how perfect!

So sweet
